What is DemocracyTodayLex?

Advocacy for a Better Local Democracy

Lexington, along with Concord and other Towns in Massachusetts, was a birthplace of democracy in America.  Yet, a majority of Lexingtonians, when surveyed, report that they feel their local government today is doing less than a very good job communicating with residents and involving them in Town affairs. 

DemocracyTodayLex is a project of a loose-knit, all-volunteer citizen group formed to respond to local government actions that effectively diminish or even shut out residents' voices.  The group is dedicated to preserving, protecting and continuously improving democracy in Lexington.  We achieve those goals by working to ensure government transparency and that residents' voices are heard.  We also promote collaborative, evidence-based decision-making by the Town.

Keeping Informed
​and Taking Action

A democracy depends upon our public bodies' transparency and accountability.  But, it also depends upon an informed and engaged public.

To that end, DemocracyTodayLex will try to keep you informed of emerging and ongoing challenges to Lexington's democracy.  We will also provide you with actions you can take to respond to those challenges.

Moreover, this website will highlight those public bodies in Lexington that can serve as models of democracy.  The first such public body we focus on is the 20/20 Vision Committee, which cites that one of its goals is to "strengthen and support existing democratic processes for town decision-making".
